EZ-Teak instructions

No other product will give you the same look as 10 or more coats of spar varnish and last MUCH longer. That varnish will take at least 2 weeks to apply.  EZ Teak can be applied in ONE DAY.

In the tropical sun, adding 2 coats of clear per year should keep it going indefinitely.

Wood Prep

Prep work is the key to a successful and beautiful finish job that will outlast virtually every other product on the market.   The wood must be clean and free of old finish and we would suggest cleaning with a 2 part teak cleaner.   Snappy Teak Nu is one that we have had success with.

Sand the teak using 80 or 100 grit with a block so you don’t create an uneven surface. If there is finish remaining, use a heat gun to soften.  Round corners a touch as any coating will not adhere to a sharp edge. Use a red 3M pad for a light scuffing after sanding.

After this step, use some denatured alcohol on a rag to help clean the dust off and remove the oils from the surface of the teak.  Use a tack rag immediately prior to application of color or clear.  This will remove very small sanding dust that will be trapped in the finish.

EZ Teak Application

Note: if at any time you stop and let any part harden overnight, all you need to do is scuff the product with the 3M pad and use a tack rag and continue with the application schedule.  If possible don’t do this on the color parts.  There is a possibility that you will remove too much base color.  If you must, it might be wise to add another coat of the color to the application schedule.

Color application

For best results use 3 coats of color and at least 2 coats clear.

Use a good quality varnish brush or foam brush (Jenn foam brushes are good).  Only mix enough color or clear to use immediately.  1 ounce will cover six square feet.  Using a mixing container with mix ratios (can be purchased from LOWES or Menards).  Mix the color with the catalyst at a 5:1 ratio.  If a thinner is needed, use odorless mineral spirits.  Add only 1 part at most.  Brush into seams and cracks and lay a coat on the teak.  After 20 minutes or so, the finish will be tacky. You can add another coat after this time.   Then the same again for 3 coats total.

Clear application

After the last coat of color and the coats are tacky, but not able to run (45 minutes).  You can apply the clear.  Mix the Clear with catalyst in a ratio of 8:1.  Again mix only enough for 1 coat.  Add another coat after 20 minutes or so.  Two coats is plenty, but 3 coats is better.

You are done!!!
